Host nation · Kenya
Kenya: Nairobi, and the Mara beyond it.
Nairobi is the likely centre of gravity for a Kenya leg, and the Mara is close enough that missing it would be the mistake. It is also the host nation carrying the most risk, so we say that too.
Nairobi
Nairobi is the largest city among the three hosts and the most straightforward long-haul arrival from the UK and Europe.
Talanta Sports City, a 60,000-seat venue in Nairobi, was reported 91 per cent complete as of May 2026, with main works targeted for the end of July 2026.
We base groups in Westlands. It is not the most expensive choice available, it is the one that lets a group of ten actually move on a matchday.
The only capital on earth with a national park
Nairobi National Park sits on the city's edge - rhino before breakfast, and back in town by mid-morning. No other capital city in the world has this.
It is the easiest way to put real wildlife into a football trip without adding a single internal flight.
For most visitors it is a half day. For anyone who has never seen the animals outside a documentary, it tends to be the half day they talk about.
The Maasai Mara, in peak season
July is peak Great Migration season in the Maasai Mara, and AFCON 2027 runs 19 June to 17 July 2027. The tournament calendar and the migration calendar overlap almost exactly.
That is a coincidence, and a fortunate one. It is also the reason July is the most booked and most expensive period of the Mara year, so lodge availability is the constraint, not desire.
Wildlife is never guaranteed. Timing this well simply gives you the best odds anyone can offer.
The risk, stated plainly
In February 2026 CAF found every proposed AFCON 2027 venue below standard, with a December 2026 deadline to fix that.
Kenya carries the largest share of that risk: an Sh11 billion funding gap and, at the time of the assessment, an unpaid hosting fee. Relocation of matches is a genuine tail risk and it is concentrated here.
We would rather you knew this before you booked a flight than after. It is also why nothing is on sale: the honest position today is a waitlist, not a package.
Common questions
Is the Great Migration happening during AFCON 2027?
July is peak Great Migration season in the Maasai Mara, and the tournament runs 19 June to 17 July 2027, so the two overlap almost exactly. It is also the most booked and most expensive Mara period of the year. Wildlife movement is never guaranteed.
Which stadium will host AFCON 2027 matches in Nairobi?
Talanta Sports City, a 60,000-seat Nairobi venue, was reported 91 per cent complete as of May 2026. Final venue allocation rests with CAF, and in February 2026 CAF found every proposed venue below standard.
Could Kenya lose its AFCON 2027 matches?
It is a real tail risk. CAF found all venues below standard in February 2026 with a December 2026 deadline; Kenya had an Sh11 billion funding gap and an unpaid hosting fee at that point. We flag it rather than hide it.
Can I see wildlife without leaving Nairobi?
Yes. Nairobi National Park is on the city's edge - the only national park inside a capital city anywhere in the world - so a morning game drive fits around a matchday.
